Bio

Michael Phillips filed his first stories as a reporter for the University Daily Kansan at the University of Kansas. While attending college, he received many awards for his work, including a Hearst Award for sportswriting, the SPJ Mark of Excellence award for columns and the USA Today/Freedom Forum scholarship. At different times he served as the Kansan's sports editor, men's basketball writer and finally lead columnist. In addition he was web editor, overseeing the design and implementation of the Kansan.com website.

While in school Michael also worked for The Wichita Eagle in his hometown of Wichita, Kan. While there he was a stringer at prep games and wrote two longform pieces - one on the finances of college merchandise that was picked up by the Associated Press as it's Kansas feature story of the week, and another profiling an area boxer and his son that was run on page A1.

In addition to his experience in Wichita he also interned at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for a summer, where he worked on various feature stories. After graduating, Michael held a summer internship with MLB.com in Washington, DC. He worked with both the Nationals and the Orioles to provide beat coverage for those and other teams when the beat writers were unavailable. He also developed several feature stories.

Currently Michael is a preps writer at the Richmond Times-Dispatch. At MLB.com's invitation, he continues to work as a stringer for the site during the baseball season. While in Richmond Michael has expanded his multimedia arsenal to include video webcasts and live blogging.
